This year's AP art class is unique. We have a few students who come to the class with a non-traditional art background. Their focus in art for their high school career has been more towards the computer graphic/graphic design/film classes. Their focus in AP will be what's called a 2-D Design portfolio. Instead of being judged on the quality of drawing and painting, they will be judged on how well their art work uses the elements & principles of art.
If this sounds interesting to you, and you consider yourself creative and interested, AP might be a good fit.
The benefit (so far) I have found this year is the interaction between the "traditional" drawing & painting artists and the 2-D artists. Each group is being exposed to the other form of art and the questions/interactions between the to "factions" (as they like to call themselves) has been productive.
Either way, both groups will be challenged as artists to create a comprehensive concentration based on their own ideas,
It will be exciting to see what they come up with...
